Sculptra vs Filler: How to Choose

One works instantly, the other rebuilds your own collagen over months. Here is how Sculptra and hyaluronic acid filler compare, and when to use each.

As we age, we lose volume and collagen. The face can start to look flatter, more hollow or simply more tired. Two of the most effective ways to restore it are hyaluronic acid filler and Sculptra, but they work in very different ways.

How hyaluronic acid filler works

Fillers like Restylane and Juvéderm are smooth gels made from hyaluronic acid, a sugar your skin already produces. They add volume exactly where they are placed, and the results are visible straight away.

Filler is ideal for:

  • Lips
  • Defining the chin and jawline
  • Under-eye hollows
  • Smile lines and marionette lines
  • Targeted, precise volume

Results typically last 6 to 18 months, depending on the product and the area. Hyaluronic acid filler can also be dissolved if needed, which many first-timers find reassuring.

How Sculptra works

Sculptra is a biostimulator. Instead of filling space directly, it contains poly-L-lactic acid, which prompts your body to build its own collagen over the following weeks and months.

Sculptra is ideal for:

  • Overall facial volume loss
  • Hollow temples and sunken cheeks
  • Deeper folds
  • Skin quality and firmness
  • Proactive, preventative aging

Because it works with your body, results appear gradually over a few months and can last up to about two years. It is usually done as a short series of treatments.

What about Radiesse?

Radiesse sits between the two. It gives some immediate structure and also stimulates collagen and elastin. It is a beautiful option for contouring the jawline and cheeks.

Can you use both?

Absolutely, and many of our patients do. Sculptra rebuilds the foundation across the face, while hyaluronic acid filler adds precise definition where it is needed. Pairing them can give a natural, balanced result that neither achieves alone.

How to choose

  • Want results for an event next month? Filler.
  • Want a subtle, gradual change that no one can quite put their finger on? Sculptra.
  • Want lip shape or a sharper jawline? Filler.
  • Noticing overall thinning and hollowing? Sculptra, often with a little filler.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sculptra look natural?

Yes. Because it rebuilds your own collagen gradually, results look naturally refreshed.

Is there downtime?

Both usually have minimal downtime. Swelling and bruising are possible for a few days.

Is Sculptra good for younger patients?

It can be. Sculptra supports the skin's collagen, which makes it a popular proactive option for patients who want to stay ahead of volume loss.
