Botox is the most popular aesthetic treatment in the country for a reason. It is quick, it has very little downtime, and when it is done well, people simply think you look rested. If you are booking your first appointment in Chicago, here is exactly what to expect, from the consultation to the two-week check-in.
What Botox actually does
Botox, Dysport and Jeuveau are all neurotoxins: purified proteins that temporarily relax specific muscles. Many of the lines on your upper face are made by movement. Every time you frown, squint or raise your brows, the muscle folds the skin above it. Over years, those folds become lines that stay even when your face is at rest.
Relax the muscle and the line softens. Start early and consistently and Botox also helps prevent deeper lines from setting in.
The most common areas we treat at Liv Aesthetics Chicago are:
- Frown lines, the "11s" between the brows
- Forehead lines across the forehead
- Crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes
- Bunny lines on the sides of the nose
- The jaw muscle, for clenching, teeth grinding and a softer jawline
Botox vs Dysport vs Jeuveau
These three products work in a very similar way. The differences are subtle: how they spread, how quickly they kick in, and how individual patients respond. Some people find one brand settles faster or lasts a little longer for them.
You do not need to pick before you come in. At your consultation we will look at your muscles, your goals and any past experience, and recommend the product that suits you.
Your first appointment, step by step
- Consultation. We talk about what bothers you, look at how your face moves, and agree on a plan. This is the moment to say if you want a very natural result or if you have an event coming up.
- Photos. We take before photos so you can see the difference at your follow-up.
- Cleansing and marking. The skin is cleaned and the injection points are planned.
- Treatment. A few tiny injections with a very fine needle. Most people describe it as a quick pinch. The whole thing usually takes about 15 minutes.
- Aftercare. You will leave with a few small bumps that settle within an hour or so, and you can go straight back to work.
When will I see results?
You will usually start to notice a difference within a few days, and results settle fully at around two weeks. That is when we like to see first-time patients for a quick check, so we can make small adjustments if needed.
How long does Botox last?
Most people enjoy their results for about three to four months. Some areas and some people metabolize it faster, and very active muscles can wear through it sooner. Many patients find that with regular treatment, results last a little longer over time.
Will I look frozen?
Not if it is placed with a light hand. The "frozen" look comes from too much product in the wrong places. Our approach is conservative: we keep natural expression, soften the harsh lines and build at follow-ups rather than overdoing it on day one.
The goal is that people notice you look well, not that you had something done.
Aftercare tips
- Stay upright for about four hours after treatment
- Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for the rest of the day
- Skip intense workouts, saunas and hot yoga until the next day
- Makeup is fine after a few hours
- Small bruises are uncommon, but can happen; arnica can help
How much does Botox cost?
The cost depends on the areas treated and how many units your muscles need, which is why we price your plan at your consultation instead of guessing. At Liv, a $150 consultation fee applies to new consultations and is fully credited toward any services you book.
Who should not get Botox?
Botox is very safe in experienced hands, but it is not for everyone. We do not treat during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and certain neuromuscular conditions and medications matter. We will go through your health history at your consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Does Botox hurt?
Most people feel a quick pinch with each injection. The needle is extremely fine and the treatment is over in minutes.
Can I get Botox on my lunch break?
Yes. There is no real downtime, which is why so many of our West Loop patients book it over lunch.
What if I want more after two weeks?
That is exactly what the follow-up is for. It is easier to add a little than to take away, so we always start conservatively.
Ready for your first Botox appointment? We start conservatively and build from there.
